This client approached us in 2000 about designing and installing a new landscape for the front of their home. By incorporating the existing trees, we created a landscape that would provide year-round interest. The landscape around the house is very shaded, so we planted hosta, pachysandra, lady’s mantle, coral bells, liriope, iris, taxus, and left pockets for seasonal color in the summer. Closer to the street, the landscape receives a little more sun, so we were able to incorporate black-eyed susan, purple loosestrife, salvia, and daylilies. Boxwood were used to provide substance during the winter months.
Two years later in the fall of 2003, the client was ready to rebuild the landscaping in the backyard, which consisted of a vast expanse of deck and empty landscape beds that encompassed the entire space. We started by designing a curvilinear patio that would complement the informal feel of the space and allow for more landscape areas. We incorporated a Japanese tree lilac, redbud, and a cutleaf Japanese maple for larger elements in the landscape. The use of flowering shrubs, such as hydrangea, and evergreen shrubs, such as boxwood and yews, helped to provide substance in the winter months. From there, we used long-blooming perennials and left small pockets for seasonal color to provide a desirable and aesthetically appealing entertaining area during the summer months when the patio is used often by the client.
