Imprellis was in the news quite a bit last spring, as users of the herbicide first realized all the damage to their landscape.  While Dupont has made efforts to make good on claims pertaining to damage caused by the herbicide, studies have shown that a ripple effect exists from its use.  Recently it was determined that a year later, 13 % of the applied imprellis remained in the soil.  It is still unclear what implications this presents as it pertains to new plantings in the area.  Read More….

The unseasonal warm temperatures have tricked our spring bulbs into thinking it is time to emerge.  Always a skeptic, knowing colder temps are sure to surface, the question remains, Will we see successful spring flowers if they have prematurely shown themselves?  Quite the discussion on the message boards, it seems there are differing opinions. One voice says, let nature take its course… the plant will survive, another says you can cover the new growth and help nature along by providing protection with mulch, then removing that protection to restart growth again when the temperatures are warmer. Read More....

  A tiny insect with a deadly hankering for hemlock trees has been found for the first time in an Ohio forest.  Known for the cottony sac shelters that they weave on branches, adelgids feed on the nutrients that hemlock trees store at the base of their needles. Adelgids can kill an adult tree in a few years.  Ohio officials have long feared that the adelgid, a native of Japan, could become the next big threat to Ohio trees. Other tree-killing insects found in Ohio include the ash-tree-killing emerald ash borer, which is found in 56 of Ohio’s 88 counties; and the Asian long-horned beetle, which was discovered last year near Bethel in Clermont County.  Interestingly, a method of control of the adelgids are the Asian long horned beetle, who is a natural predator.  Read more…
