We were brought on by the builder and architect to help site the new detached garage/office building in the wooded backyard of the client’s property. We were able to position the new building to save specimen trees—in particular a beech tree in close proximity to the home. The new building was sited so the garage doors would not be visible from the existing home or from the road. This created a need for a larger drive area, but made it much more aesthetically pleasing. The next phase was to create a connection through the woods between the existing home and the new garage. We chose the same stone used on the façade of the hour and garage for the walkway and the patio expansion. As the project grew it was decided to redo the existing fire pit location with a more permanent version. The result is a simple wooded pathway for quick access between the garage and home.
Also a lower level sitting area was added for more table space. Timber walls were removed to allow steps to wrap the existing patio in order to create a feel of a larger patio and bring about sitting areas with excellent views towards the woods. Selected weak and decaying trees were removed along with brush during house construction; this allowed for a safer and larger opening for the fire pit area. Woodland perennials were the plant of choice and a few key evergreen plantings. All needed to be deer “resistant,” due to the heavy wildlife surrounding the home.
