Growing the Next Generation of Landscape Professionals

Landscaping is about more than the work we do today, it’s about the people who will shape the industry tomorrow. One of the ways we invest in that future is through our internship program, which gives emerging professionals the opportunity to learn, grow, and gain real-world experience alongside our team.

This season, we had the opportunity to work alongside Neeli, a graduate student pursuing her master’s degree in landscape architecture at The Ohio State University. During her time at M.J. Design, Neeli gained hands-on experience in both the field and the shop while continuing her education, learning not only the technical side of landscaping, but also how thoughtful design, teamwork, and long-term planning come together on real projects.

Neelie especially appreciated the mentorship and support she received throughout the internship.

"I really enjoyed how Molly and Joel were willing to teach me so much about the industry, as well as making sure I was familiar with the plants we use for both annual flowers and new installations."

The start of the summer annual season quickly became her favorite part of the experience.

“It was fun to dive straight into decorating client pots at the shop and being able to see how they grow throughout the season.”

What makes internships so valuable is the balance between learning and doing. From early mornings on job sites to observing how projects are planned, managed, and executed, interns see firsthand what it takes to build landscapes that last. Neelie worked with multiple teams throughout the season and found every experience meaningful.

"Everyone I worked with was super willing to teach and guide me, no matter what team I was on for the day. I felt like my education was truly prioritized as an intern."

That hands-on exposure has helped shape Neelie’s goals as she looks ahead to life after graduation. After completing her master’s program, she plans to pursue a role at a landscape architecture firm that prioritizes green infrastructure in urban environments to combat heat islands, or one that focuses on forest conservation and preservation. Reflecting on her time at M.J. Design, she noted,

“My experience allowed me to work with both the design and management of landscapes, helping me truly understand the process and importance of building healthy landscapes.”

Seeing that professional path take shape is one of the most rewarding parts of mentorship. It’s a reminder that strong careers are built through experience, guidance, and opportunities to learn.

At M.J. Design, we believe investing in people is just as important as investing in projects. Our internship program gives students the chance to explore the industry, develop practical skills, and gain confidence, all while contributing meaningfully to the work we do every day.

We’re proud to support the next generation of landscape professionals and look forward to continuing to provide opportunities for those who are passionate about growing in this field.
