There is something special about a handmade holiday wreath—it is creative, personal, and instantly makes your home feel festive. Whether you are using fresh greens or a trusty faux wreath you have had for years, we are here to help you design something beautiful this season.
We have been busy prepping both live and artificial wreaths for our seasonal décor clients, and we thought ‘why not share a few of our favorite tricks so you can try one at home?’
At M.J. Design, we lean into natural tones and textures, think burlap ribbon, soft gold, and cream berries, and brown or gold bells and bulbs. It is a classic, timeless color palette that feels cozy and elegant all at once. However, you can incorporate our same design principals into fun holiday color if that is more your style.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
For a live wreath:
Fresh greenery like pine, cedar, boxwood, or fir
Floral wire and clippers
Wreath frame (metal or grapevine works great)
Ribbon, pinecones, berries, or dried oranges for decoration
For a faux wreath:
Artificial greenery base (reuse last year’s wreath!)
Wired ribbon and hot glue gun
Seasonal accents — like the gold and burlap tones we are using this season
Step 2: Build Your Base
We start by attaching greenery in small bundles around the frame, overlapping as we go and securing each bundle with floral wire. Do not worry if yours looks a little wild at first. Natural, layered texture is part of the charm!
For our artificial wreaths, we are mostly just fluffing the greenery. If you have one from last year, be sure to dust off any ribbon and bulbs you might want to reuse and plug in any lights from last year to see if you need to do any restringing.
For more fill, add live branches to give your faux wreath something extra special. Lights are optional and depend on placement! If you do not have a place to discreetly run an extension cord, skip them. Places like windows and doors can forgo any lights and will be sure to shine in the daytime.
Step 3: Add Texture and Character
Once your base looks full, it is time for the fun part: accents! This year, our team is using burlap bows, gold, and cream berries, and brown or gold bells and bulbs to create a natural yet festive look.
Try grouping your elements in threes for balance and mixed textures – shiny ornaments next to matte ribbons, or pinecones beside metallic accents.
Pro tip: Use wire to attach items so you can easily refresh or restyle your wreath next year!
Step 4: Tie It Together
Finish it off with your favorite ribbon. We love burlap for a cozy, timeless feel. Once everything feels balanced, hang it up and step back to admire your work. There’s truly no wrong way to decorate when it is made with joy (and a little holiday spirit).
