Lawn Prep for Winter 101

As the temperatures cool down and we hopefully get more rain, your lawn will begin to green up. It’s essential to care for it, especially after the stress of the continued drought conditions. Here are some key tips to keep your grass healthy:

  1. Aerate the Soil: Aeration helps relieve any compacting, allowing water, nutrients, and air to reach the roots more effectively.

  2. Fertilize: Apply a fall fertilizer with a good balance of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to promote strong root growth and prepare for winter.

  3. Mow Regularly: Keep the grass at a height of about 3 inches. This helps the grass store energy and reduces stress.

  4. Water Wisely: Continue to water your lawn, just because you get a little rain, doesn’t mean that is enough. Rule of thumb is 1 in. of water per week. Aim for deep, infrequent watering to encourage root development.

  5. Overseed: If your lawn has bare patches, overseed in the fall to help thicken it up and prevent weeds.

  6. Control Weeds: Apply a pre-emergent herbicide, if necessary, but be cautious with timing, as some can affect new grass seedlings.

  7. Clear Debris: Rake leaves and remove any debris to ensure sunlight reaches the grass and to prevent disease.

  8. Adjust Your Lawn Care Routine: As temperatures cool, reduce the frequency of mowing and watering as the grass enters dormancy.

Taking these steps will help your lawn recover and thrive as it prepares for winter!
