We're Talking Toilet Paper. Yes, Really.

We spend a lot of time talking about trees at M.J. Design Associates. Planting them, caring for them, and protecting them.

But here's something we don't talk about nearly enough: how many trees end up in our bathrooms.

Yep. We're talking toilet paper.

And one Columbus-based company is doing something pretty interesting about it!

Meet Leafy Products

Remember the great toilet paper shortage of 2020? (We're guessing nobody wants to relive that!)

While the rest of us were hunting down the last rolls on grocery store shelves, a group of Columbus entrepreneurs saw an opportunity to do something different.

They founded Leafy Products, a Black-owned company founded in Columbus, OH with a mission to make everyday essentials more sustainable, starting with 100% bamboo toilet paper.

But why bamboo?

Wait... Bamboo Isn't a Tree?

Nope! It's actually a grass. And a pretty impressive one at that.

Unlike trees that can take decades to mature, certain species of bamboo can grow several feet in a single day under ideal conditions. Better yet, bamboo can regrow from its existing root system after harvesting, making it an interesting renewable alternative to traditional wood pulp.

And considering that toilet paper is something we use once and flush away, finding ways to reduce our dependence on freshly harvested trees makes a whole lot of sense.

Of course, not all bamboo products are created equally. Responsible sourcing and manufacturing still matter, and recycled toilet paper is another great forest-friendly option.

More Than Just a Roll of Toilet Paper

What we love about Leafy isn't just the product. It's the mission behind it.

Beyond creating bamboo-based essentials, Leafy has supported local shelters and other businesses in need. They're showing that a company can think about its community and the environment at the same time.

And they're doing it right here in Columbus!

At M.J., we believe sustainability isn't always about making enormous changes overnight. Sometimes it's simply asking a question about something you've purchased your entire life:

Could there be a better way to do this?

Turns out, even your bathroom can be a place to start.
