Deer may be beautiful to look at, but they can quickly turn your carefully maintained yard into an all-you-can-eat buffet. If you’re noticing nibbled plants, missing flowers, or even antler rubs on young trees, chances are you have some hungry visitors. The good news? There are a number of practical, earth-and-critter friendly steps you can take to protect your landscape without harming the wildlife.
🌿 Deer-Resistant Plants
One of the easiest ways to minimize deer damage is by choosing plants they typically avoid. While no plant is 100% deer-proof, they tend to stay away from:
Lavender, Russian Sage, and Chives: Strongly scented herbs.
Allium, Daffodil, Yarrow and Hyacinth: Flowers with strong scents or toxic properties.
Juniper, Barberry, Maple, and Blue Spruce: Trees and shrubs with textures or scents that deer avoid. Plants with strong scents, fuzzy textures, or bitter taste are generally less appealing to deer.

🧴 Scent-Based Repellents
These products use strong odors to deter deer from your plants.
Liquid Fence: Apply directly to plants.
Deer Scram: Place around the perimeter of your garden.
Deer Stopper : Similar to liquid fence but includes oils to help it adhere longer.
Note: Reapply after rain or heavy dew and every few weeks to maintain effectiveness. Rotate different types of repellents so deer don’t get used to them.
Physical Barriers & Fencing
If deer pressure is heavy, physical barriers are the most reliable solution.
Fencing: A deer fence should be at least 7–8 feet tall to be effective.
Netting: Use around young trees, shrubs, or garden beds.
Tree Guards: Protect trunks from antler rubbing in the fall with tree wraps or mesh tubes.
💧 Scare Tactics
Motion-activated lights, sprinklers, or noise devices can startle deer and discourage them from coming back. Just like with repellents, changing up your deterrents keeps them more effective.
🐾 Additional Deterrents
Coyote Urine Granules: Products like Shake Away mimic predator presence, deterring deer.
Ultrasonic Deer Repellers: Emit high-frequency sounds to repel deer; however, some models may also affect pets.
🧠 Be Consistent
Deer are creatures of habit. Once they learn your landscape is a food source, they’ll keep coming back. The key is to stay ahead of them—start preventative measures early in the season and stay consistent.
