Watering 101

Improper watering is one of the most common and preventable causes of plant stress, and getting it right requires more than simply turning on the hose. Effective watering depends on several key factors: plant species, age, soil type, weather, and location.

Here is a quick chart to help explain.

Watering Timeline

Phase

Frequency & Volume

At planting

Deep soak until ≥ 18" depth (several times)

Weeks 1–2

Daily deep watering

Weeks 3–12

Water every 2-3 days or a weekly soak

Years 1–2 Establishment

Weekly deep soak (until roots leave root ball)

Winter (evergreens/young)

Water if dry before freezing; at ~40 °F

Watering might seem straightforward, but doing it right is key to nurturing healthy, resilient plants. Rather than giving frequent shallow doses, use slow, deep watering to promote root growth well below the soil surface—typically 6 to 12 inches deep. This method encourages robust root systems that can withstand drought and temperature fluctuations, as opposed to surface roots that dry out quickly and leave plants vulnerable.

Timing matters—morning is best. Watering during cool hours reduces evaporation, gives foliage time to dry before nightfall (helping prevent disease), and ensures efficient uptake. Evening watering is the next best option if mornings aren’t possible but avoid night watering that keeps foliage moist when pathogens thrive.

Before watering, conduct a simple moisture check. Insert a finger or a soil probe into the top two inches—if it's still moist, skip watering. For deeper assessments, dig down six to eight inches after watering to ensure moisture penetration. This helps you tailor watering schedules to your soil type and local weather conditions, avoiding redundant watering after rainfall.

Overwatering vs. Underwatering

Symptom

Overwatering

Underwatering

Leaves wilt

Soft, limp, yellowing

Dry, droopy, crisp

Leaf color change

Yellowing, sometimes brown

Browning at edges/tips

Soil moisture

Constantly wet

Dry, shrinking away from roots

Growth

Stunted, small leaves

Slow, halted
